2020 is the year which taught us a lot of things. From realising the need for savings to taking care of the cleanliness of our surroundings, there were a lot of things where we started giving more attention. This was the year which gave people a new way to communicate, learn and teach. Who thought so in the starting of the year 2020 that students will be graduating online, work would be done from home and students will be evaluated digitally. However this all happened and with this, one thing that increased a lot was Screen Time.

According to Economic Times, the Screen Time for children in the age group of 5 to 15 years has shot up by 100% since lockdown. Another report revealed that 65% of children became device addictive.

Sitting in the front of the screen for hours, learning new things, video calling to friends, watching web series became our routine task but in all this, we forgot one thing i.e Time for our Eyes.

After the brain, our eyes are the second most complex organ in the human body. Our eyes are amazing machines that help us process life visually, and provide us with a lifeline to everyday tasks and moments. But we forgot to give our eyes back some gentle care and love.

Since lockdown, prolonged exposure to devices has invited various eye problems, ranging from dryness, irritation and redness to grittiness and watering in the eyes and even headache. The exposure to blue lights coming out of devices is the main reason for dryness so it is important to reduce our Screen Time to prevent the complications linked to it.

A 2014 Nielsen report found that adults log a total of about 11 hours of screen time a day. Our health has negatively affected by spending too much time in front of the screen.

  1. Poor sleep — The blue light from digital devices suppresses the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, keeping us from having restful sleep.
  2. Neck and Back pain- Poor posture while sitting in front of computers can cause chronic neck and back pain.
  3. More screen time means more weight- Sitting for hours in front of the desktop and not doing any physical activities increases the chances of gaining weight.
  4. Vision Issues- Looking at a screen for extended periods can cause “computer vision syndrome.” The symptoms: strained, dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches.

Even right now you are reading this blog in front of a screen. Well, it can’t help. The way we are accepting the new normal made it essential to devote a little more time to our screen. But, we can take some precautionary measures and steps to prevent our eyes from any kind of problems and doing our work too.

  • Follow the 20–20–20 rule, every 20 minutes look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid working under low light or fluorescent light or in a dark room
  • Cut glare by using a screen filter.
  • Make sure you blink while doing work in front of the screen. Blinking helps our eyes to prevent dryness.
  • Adjust your device, make sure that it is at arm’s distance from you.

So, the next time while you get up to sit in front of screens for doing work, remember to give some time to one of the most beautiful organs of our body. Take care of your health, be safe. Have a nice day.
